That’s My Boy starts by introducing the character of Donny Berger & how he became famous after having an affair with his maths teacher when he was just 13 years old. For his role in the affair he gets a huge deal in order to sell his story to a magazine & manages to go on to obtain a tremendous deal of fortune & fame. On the other side of the story, the teacher ends up in jail for 30 years, & she gives birth to a child as a result of the affair.

That’s My Boy

25 years after Donny has lost a tremendous deal of his wealth after spending it on women, cars & partying. He is played by Adam Sandler & it is clear that since his peak at age 13, things have only gone downhill. The character is clearly living far in the past & he has managed to accumulate over $40,000 worth of debt to the IRS. If he doesn’t pay it off then he’s going to be imprisoned for evading taxes.

In order to avoid jail he decides to approach his son who has become a successful hedge fund manager. Compared to his father he is very financially successful & he has managed to turn his life around after being born into unfortunate circumstances.

The casting for That’s My Boy is superior & from looking at Adam Sandler & Andy Samberg, who plays his son, they could easily pass for being family. As actors, they have moreover a very similar history in comedy & on the Saturday night live television show, & Samberg has played Sandler on several occasions. They both do an superior job in their roles & while it is dumb comedy, yet it is rather funny.

The supporting cast in That’s My Boy is moreover superior with appearances from James Caan, Will Forte & Leighton Meester. Unfortunately however, the supporting cast remain rather under utilised & seem to simply be there to bounce off the main characters.

The script is funny, yet incredibly predictable. This is the sort of film where you know exactly what is going to happen before you’ve even seen the film, & you won’t be surprised when you go to the cinema. As you might expect, the father turns his life around in order to win back the love of his son which has been lost because of his poor behaviour & life choices. It is going to be no surprise to the audience how That’s My Boy ends.

The fact is, the audience will be willing to forgive That’s My Boy for having a predictable storyline as it is very funny. There are times when the humour is really pushed to the limits & not all of the jokes will work for everyone. It is not all brash humour however & there are some tremendous subtle moments of comedy which the audience will enjoy. This is a pretty decent Adam Sandler film & if you are in the mood for some serious comedy laughs, then That’s My Boy is well worth seeing.
