Olivier Nakache & Eric Toledana are two French scriptwriters who are not known for their subtlety, yet despite this they have never so far released a film that is quite as offensive as Untouchable aka Untouchable. Untouchable is a movie which has so much racism in it that people will almost be upset that it is still present in movie houses in the United States.

It has recently been announced that the Weinstein Company have bought the remake rights for Untouchable & they have a ‘commission’ to recreate the cringeworthy film which is a comedy approximately a rich white man who hires a black caretaker.

Untouchable says that it is based on a true story yet in real life the story is actually quite different. The movie tells the story of Phillippe, who is played by François Cluzet, as a man who has been paralysed from the neck down in a paragliding accident. He is incredibly wealthy & is only family is his adopted daughter, a teenager called Elisa as his wife died. All of the staff that surrounds him keep him rather coddled in his wealthy cocoon.

Philippe has a reputation for going through staff quickly & the turnover in his household is great. Therefore he is often putting out job advertisements for new caretakers. One man, who has recently been released from prison after being jailed for robbery, applies for the job & rather surprisingly, gets it. This man is called Driss & rather surprisingly a warm relationship develops between Phillippe & his new caretaker.

As you might expect there are plenty of comical moments in Untouchable which take the Mickey out of high culture. There are plenty of jabs at modern art & other similar things yet the idea that someone from a completely different culture needs to be the one to point these things out is a rather tired idea.

Untouchable

Sadly in the production of Untouchable, the character of Driss is treated as little more than a performer who is there for the rich people’s entertainment & this has rather racist connotations. The way that he has to perform & entertain his employer is much too reminiscent of slavery to be comfortable with most audiences. It is a shame that Sy has been cast in this role as it is rather demeaning to his acting talents, not to mention a touch racist.

It’s almost distressing to think that the writers of Untouchable were actually trying to be funny, rather than racist. In one scene someone comments that when Driss is wearing a suit he looks like President Obama, almost implying that the only black person she can think of who wears a suit is the president.

All of this of course is supposed to make the audience laugh at Untouchable, & it may seduce some people who don’t have a tremendous deal of intellectual capacity. The music & scripts are designed to manipulate people’s emotions & the atmosphere is poorly put together. Overall, donate this a miss if you have an ounce of sense in you.
