Detachment is a chronicle of three weeks in the lives of several high school teachers, administrators and students through the eyes of a substitute teacher named Henry Barthes. Henry roams from school to school, imparting modes of knowledge, but never staying long enough to form any semblance of sentient attachment. A perfect profession for one seeking to hide out in the open. One day Henry arrives at his next assignment. Upon his entry into this particular school, a secret world of emotion is awakened within him by three women. A girl named Meredith in his first period. A fellow teacher Ms. Madison, and a street hooker named Erica, whom Henry has personally granted brief shelter from the streets. Each one of these women, like Henry, are in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

The first thing that should be mentioned approximately this new film Detachment is that it is incredibly depressing. The film plays on one primary emotion, utter sadness, & it doesn’t let up throughout the entire film.
The film follows a new teacher who is coming to a school, & this is certainly not a new idea. What is different approximately this film however, is that it is not a story of inspiration, which usually happens when a teacher comes to a new school in a film. Instead, it shows a rather dark reality & makes a strong statement approximately our existence & the state of the education system in the United States. Watch Detachment.
It makes a strong political point approximately the No Child Left Behind law which basically means that even smart students are not motivated to study, because they will always have to wait for the slowest child in the class to catch up. This leaves some people in the education system without any consequences to actions they take & this is not a positive environment. The very realisation of the reality of this film is one of the reasons why it is so depressing.
Just because the film is depressing does not mean it is bad, it does not have to inspire people for it to be a satisfactory film. However, from the very moment the film begins it lets you know that it’s going to be depressing & it doesn’t let up for a single moment. This is fine, yet it moreover doesn’t teach the audience anything & there is no real message that can be taken from the film. You will feel depressed from the outset of the film & feel no better when it finally concludes. Watch Detachment.
The film is still a remarkable achievement however & this is largely due to the fantastic performance of Adrien Brody in the main role. He plays the substitute teacher & is mesmerising as he manages to care too little & too much the same time. Many people will see this as being one of the most honest performances of his entire career. It is exactly this sort of acting which will remind the audience why huge directors select Mr Brody to star in their films.
Mr Brody’s performance is unquestionably the highlight of this film yet Sami Gayle moreover puts on a stunning performance. She plays a prostitute who Mr Brody becomes friends with & the friendship they develop is one of the most absorbing things in the film.
The number of other huge names that have been attracted to this film is quite astounding & performances from Lucy Liu, Christina Hendricks & Bryan Cranston are all notable. The only problem is that their performances are too short, & it would have been nice to see them more involved with the production. Many people might find it all too depressing to be a substantial film, yet this just highlights a problem that audiences are too used to pleased endings.
