"This is a boring movie. The over-the-top outlandishness can't disguise that the whole 95 minutes represent one big snooze-fest." - James Berardinelli, ReelViews
"Whether Cage is still paying off castles, appeasing the IRS, or rebuilding his comic book collection, it's clear he's decided, for now, to trade his talent for cold, hard cash." - Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News
"Spirit of Vengeance is weighted down for long stretches in the middle, as it starts to treat its own religious hokum plotline with undue seriousness." - Andrew Barker, Variety

Review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012) e
In the first Ghost Rider film, Nicolas Cage, playing the character of Johnny Blaze, made a deal with the devil in order to prevent his father’s death. This deal meant that Blaze had to go through the streets at night in order to apprehend criminals. Since this first film, some time has passed, & although Blaze is now retired he’s constantly haunted by the fact that the Ghost Rider might reawaken within him.
The devil has different plans other than a quiet retirement for Blaze however & he kidnaps a young boy, Danny, who is played by Fergus Riordan, & the only way for him to be saved is for Blaze to come to the rescue. The boy moreover has certain powers that means the devil can use him to destroy the world.
The first film was released in 2007 & is based on the Marvel comic. The original received very mixed reviews yet the financial success of the film meant that Sony, obviously, wanted to create a sequel. Nicolas Cage agreed to star in the new film & the script has been written by the creators of Crank.
This Ghost Rider film is significantly different to the first & is much more closely aligned with the original comic that it is based on. Nicolas Cage has stated that he is an enormous fan of the original comic book & is very pleased that he can star in the sequel to the original. Many critics said that the first film had a problem because the lead character was seen as too heroic, which was quite a serious departure from the comic books.
This time around the character of Cage is rather different & he is now more of an adrenaline junkie than before. The re-imagining of the character certainly works much better & there is unquestionably more appeal to him. The writers have clearly put a lot of work into creating a better interpretation of the Ghost Rider character than was seen in the first film.
Unfortunately, this is where they seem to have focused most of their efforts & the other characters are much less believable. The casting moreover seems to be rather inaccurate & Violante Placido, who has been cast as a woman with a 10-year-old son, barely looks over 25.
There are moreover several other problems with the film too, & there seemed to be many logical holes that are simply not dealt with. For example, the character of Johnny Whitworth has the ability to make things age much faster than normal. It is very noticeable how in some cases this takes minutes, yet another is just a few seconds. There seems to be no logic approximately this & no explanation approximately why the times differ.
This film is not a typical Marvel production & is might have a complex time finding the right audience. The story is rather flat & when you consider all the logical holes it might not be enjoyable for some people.
